Act on Insights: Two Types of Cards

Act on Insights shows two kinds of card, and knowing which is which tells you what to do next.

Act on Insights is where most fundraisers spend most of their time in Dataro. It shows two different kinds of card: one that names a group of donors worth a campaign, and one that names a single donor worth a phone call this week. The two call for different responses, so it helps to know which you are looking at.

The short version

Model insights are cohort-level. They say things like "15 donors are ready to give a mid-level gift", and five predictive models produce them. Individual donor alerts are time-limited stewardship moments for a single donor, such as a donor making the largest gift on their record. Eight event types produce those. Model insights lead to an audience, and alerts lead to a conversation.

Model insights: a cohort worth a campaign

A model insight groups donors who share a predicted behavior and a sensible next action. The card leads with a count and the behavior, so you read something like "20 recurring donors are at risk of churning" or "15 donors are ready to give a mid-level gift".

Five models produce these cards:

  • Churn risk. Recurring donors who look likely to stop giving.
  • Next gift. Donors most likely to respond to your next one-off ask.
  • Recurring giving conversion. One-off donors ready to move to a regular commitment.
  • Mid-level opportunity. Donors ready to give inside the mid band you have configured.
  • Major gift opportunity. Donors with the capacity and the affinity to give above your major threshold.

Because a model insight is a cohort, the natural next step is an audience. Open the card, review the ranked donor list on the insight detail page, adjust the size or the filters if you need to, then save it or publish it to your CRM.

Individual donor alerts: a moment worth a call

An individual donor alert fires because something specific just happened to one donor. Eight events trigger them:

  • Largest-ever gift
  • Lifetime giving milestone
  • Gift-count milestone
  • Anniversary
  • Welcome back (reactivation)
  • Drifting away (pre-lapse)
  • First big gift
  • Second-gift retention window

These cards are time-limited. A thank-you call for a record gift has more effect in the same week than two months later, so we recommend clearing alerts as they arrive. Each one links through to the donor profile, where you get the history and context you need before you pick up the phone.

How do the two card types compare?
Model insights Individual donor alerts
Scope A cohort of donors One named donor
How many kinds Five, one per model Eight, one per event type
What triggers it A prediction about future behavior Something that already happened
Typical next step Build, save, or publish an audience A call, a note, or a personal thank you
Where the card takes you The insight detail page The donor profile
Urgency Works for weeks Best acted on the same week
Working through your cards

Act on Insights sits on your homepage, so it is the first thing you see when you sign in at app.dataro.io/v3.

  1. Read the headline on each card. It gives you the count and the behavior, which is usually enough to decide whether to act on it today.
  2. Open the card. A model insight opens the insight detail page with the ranked donor list. An alert opens that donor's profile.
  3. Act on the card. For a model insight, that means saving or publishing the audience, and for an alert it means making contact.
  4. Move on to the next card.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards will I see on a given day?

Between one and five. The engine is tuned to hold that range, so the page is never empty and never more than you can work through.

The same donor appeared on two cards. Is one of them wrong?

No. Model insights rarely overlap, but when a donor fits two, both cards are valid because the donor is relevant to both actions. Working an insight covers how to decide which to act on first.

Can I hide the card types that do not apply to my program?

Not yet. Turning model insights on or off per role type is the first stage planned for configurable alerts. See Working an insight.

What happens to a card if I ignore it?

Model insights come back, because the underlying donors are still in your file and still eligible. The count on the card can change from one week to the next as donors move between tiers. Individual donor alerts are tied to an event that already happened, so they are worth treating as time-limited.
