Building a Simple Direct Mail Appeal Audience in Dataro

Objective: Select the best donors to include in your direct mail appeal for the optimal net return.

Step 1: Determine your campaign size

Finding your ideal campaign size is easy with Dataro's Campaign Size Suggestions, which automatically calculate and segment the best audience for a high ROI appeal.

  • Go to Donors & Audiences -> Campaign Size Suggestions
  • Select the ‘DM Appeal’ Campaign Size Suggestion. This is the maximum Dataro DM Appeal Rank that Dataro recommends you include for the best net return.

Step 2: Create your DM Appeal Audience 


Option 1: Using Dataro’s recommended campaign size
  • From Campaign Size Suggestions, click the recommended Campaign Size. This takes you to a pre-filtered Direct Mail Appeals Audience using the recommended size.
  • Click ‘Columns’ to add or remove columns from your Audience
  • Click ‘Edit Filters’ to refine your list by apply additional filters
  • Click ‘Save filters’ to save any refinements you make
Option 2: Creating your own audience using Dataro’s ranks and scores.

  • Go to Donors & Audiences -> Audience Builder
  • Click ‘Columns’ to add or remove columns from your Audience
    • Add ‘Mail Appeal Rank’, ‘Mail Appeal Score’, and ‘Ask Amount’
  • Click ‘Filter’ to customize your list
  • Click ‘Add a filter’ to display the list of filters
  • Select ‘Mail Appeal’ under the ‘Ranking’ sub-heading in ‘Donor attributes’
  • Change the ‘Operator’ to ‘Lower than or equal to’
  • Set the value to your desired list size. This should be the maximum Mail Appeal Ranking you want to include (e.g. the recommended campaign size suggestion). 
    • Your filter should now say ‘Donor with Mail Appeal Ranking lower than or equal to X (e.g. 7300)’.
  • Click ‘add filter’ to refine your list by applying additional filters or click “add an ‘or’” to add a new filter group
  • Check the ‘List Overview’ column to see how many contacts match your filters
  • Click ‘Save filters’ to return to the audience
