Researching a prospective donor

You have two options for conducting donor research with ProspectAI, individual search and bulk mode. For either path, you will need four key pieces of information about the donor(s):

  • Full name
  • City/town
  • State/region
  • Country
To increase the accuracy of your search results, you may supply optional additional information, including street address, age, gender, and affiliated people or organizations.

To search for an individual:

By default, ProspectAI will open to the Individual Search tab, where you will enter the donor’s information into the appropriate fields. After you have entered the information, click the Search button below the form.

To run a bulk search:

Switch to the Bulk Upload tab. Prepare your CSV file for upload, ensuring that it contains all of the necessary columns. (You can download a template spreadsheet from the Bulk Upload screen to ensure that your data is formatted correctly.) Drag and drop the file into ProspectAI, name the list, and click Search

Reviewing your donor report(s)

After a search is completed, your search results will be displayed, either as a single donor profile for an individual search, or a list of donor profiles for a bulk search. In the latter case, click on a donor name to view their report.

Reviewing bulk upload lists

Once your list has been successfully uploaded and researched, you can access the results anytime on the Past Results page. Select your desired list to access a list view, where you can add additional columns to the table and sort the results to easily identify your highest capacity donor prospects.

Identify resolution

If multiple possible donors with the same name are identified, the most likely donor will be selected. You can review the other profiles identified by selecting Similar Profiles. If one of the similar profiles appears to be a better match for your donor, select that profile to run a full search on the individual in question.

Reading a donor report

Each donor report contains several core components:

  • Data Summary: An overview of the sources ProspectAI reviewed during the research process
  • Executive Summary: A high-level overview of the donor, including biographical details and notable philanthropy
  • Profile Overview: A summary of the donor’s giving history and capacity, and biographical information
  • Profile Summary: A series of scores, rating the donor on capacity, affinity, giving recency, and overall fit
  • Contact Information: Any contact information discovered, including phone, email, and social media profiles
  • Giving Summary: An overview and visualization of total and typical giving
  • Giving History: Each public gift found, separated between charitable and political giving history
  • Capacity Estimates: Analysis of multiple data sources, including net worth, stock and real estate holdings, and giving history in order to assess giving capacity
  • Affinity Assessments: Causes that the donor cares about and has publicly supported
  • Volunteering, Advocacy, and Event Attendance: Additional information regarding a donor’s interests and affinities
  • Connections: Family members and professional contacts of the donor
  • Recommended Outreach: A recommended strategy for making contact with the donor, based on your organization’s programs and the donor’s affinities
  • Due Diligence: Any controversies or concerns involving the donor that were uncovered during the research process
  • Sources: A consolidated list of all sources referenced in the report

Saving and exporting your donor report(s)

Each donor report that you create with ProspectAI is automatically saved in the Past Results section, which can be accessed from the main menu. Here you will find previous individual searches, as well as bulk uploads.

To export an individual donor profile, select the profile and click Export to save and/or print the profile as a PDF.

FAQ

What is ProspectAI?

ProspectAI is an AI agent trained to review public data sources for information about a donor prospect, analyze its findings, and compile a summary report on the donor’s capacity, affinity, connections, and more.

What are AI agents & how do they work?

An AI agent is a program designed to complete a task, and many agents can combine to solve a larger human problem. For example, when researching a prospect, you might have to do a google search, as well as look up various sources, read PDFs, and so on. You would then evaluate all this information, decide which pieces of information are relevant and refer to your prospect, and then compile a report. An AI agent can refer to each individual piece - a program designed to read a PDF, for example - and also the larger program that combines all these little workflows.

How does ProspectAI deal with identity resolution for individual sources and citations?

ProspectAI looks for context within individual sources to group sources together and then assigns identities to the clusters of sources.

How does ProspectAI evaluate the accuracy/credibility of the sources it finds?

The large language models leveraged by ProspectAI use a combination of source authority/reputation, recency of publication, and cross-referencing with other sources to gauge accuracy.

How do I see the sources for each data point?

Click on any data point to see a link to the original source.

How is total capacity calculated?

First, we start with net worth by adding up real-estate equity, stock, and other visible assets. If assets are unknown, we simply use ≈ 3× annual income.

Capacity is then defined as the higher of 5 % of net worth or 10 % of yearly income, rounded for easy asks, which is a proxy for potential giving over the next 5 years.

How are the profile summary scores calculated?

Capacity score is calculated based on a combination of income/salary, net worth, and historical giving in the last 5 years.

Affinity is a function of the number of gifts to your specific organization type.

Recency is based on the date of the most recent gift.

Confidence is based on the number of sources.

How is salary calculated?

It is based on the prospect’s job title and publicly available information about similar titles/role types.

How is estimated net worth calculated?

Net worth is calculated by adding up real-estate equity, stock, and other visible assets. If assets are unknown, we simply use ≈ 3× annual income.

Are notes added to a profile visible to all users?

Yes, notes added to a donor profile are saved across the organization and are visible to any user who views the profile. This field can be used to share internal information, such as notes on your interactions with the prospect.

How do the "similar profiles work" and does it cost extra credits to run?

The profiles displayed when you click the Similar Profiles button are alternate potential identities that ProspectAI has identified. Simply viewing the similar profile summaries does not cost any credits, but running a full search on one of the identified individuals (by clicking on their profile) will count as an additional unique search and cost one credit.
