Removing or Excluding a Segment from an Audience

There may be certain donors you wish to exclude from a campaign for a variety of reasons. Perhaps they have opted out of the channel, or are active in another program. Here's how to do it.

To exclude certain contacts from your audience, it is important to remember that Dataro’s audience filters define the donors that you want to include in your list. As such, to exclude certain donors, you will need to select filters that specify only the donors that you want on your list. By default all other donors will be excluded. For instance, to exclude donors who are in a saved “Do not contact” list, you will need to filter your list to include only donors who are not in that saved list.

To exclude certain contacts from your audience:

  1. From your list, navigate to Audience Builder by clicking “Edit Filters.”
  2. Click “add filter” to add your exclusion filter.
  3. Adjust the filter settings. The exact process will vary depending on the filter. For example:
    • If you want to remove donors with no mailing address, select “Address available / is / yes,” which will include only donors with available addresses.
    • If you want to remove donors who are members of another program, campaign, or Saved Audience, select “[Program status/In Audience/Inclusion in Campaign] / not in / [name]” which will include only donors who are not in the selected category.
    • If you want to exclude donors based on actions they have taken (or not taken), such as donors who have given large gifts or donors who haven't opened an email in the past 6 months, first select your filter and choose the time parameter (all time, since a certain date, etc.). Then, click on the plus sign button below the filter to display additional numeric filters, where you can select options such as “gift amount / less than / $1000” or “number of emails / equal to / 0.”
Important note: If your list contains multiple groups (built using “OR” statements) and you would like to exclude certain contacts from the list entirely, you must apply the exclusion criteria to each group individually, as shown in the video above.

Remember that exclusions will decrease the size of your list! If you’d like a bigger list, add another group of donors, or adjust your filters accordingly!
