Adding an Additional Segment to an Audience

Occasionally, you may want to include multiple independent groups of donors in one audience. Here's how to do it!

One campaign audience may include multiple donor segments. For instance, a mail appeal audience might include both donors who have a high likelihood of responding to the mailer, as well as a group of lapsed donors who are likely to reactivate.

This can be easily accomplished using "or" statements in Audience Builder. To learn more about the difference between “and” and “or” statements when building an audience, please reference this article.

To add a new segment to your audience:

  1. From your list, navigate to Audience Builder by clicking “Edit Filters.”
  2. In the Filters menu on the left side of the screen, select the “add an ‘or’” button.
  3. Select new Filters to define the segment that you want to add to your audience.
    1. You may select multiple filters in order to use an “and” statement within your additional segment. For instance, adding a group of donors who have a high reactivation score AND who have also opened an email from you in the past 30 days.

To add multiple additional segments:

    1. Simply repeat the process above, clicking the “add an ‘or’” button to begin each new segment.
      1. In the Filters panel on the left side of the screen, you can view your segments as they are created. Each segment included in the audience will be numbered for clarity.
    2. To edit any of the segments included in your list, select that segment from the Filters panel. The currently selected segment is noted by the bold number next to the segment and at the top of the Group panel.
  • Important note on exclusions: Audience exclusions apply only to individual segment groups. If you would like to exclude some donors from your list entirely, you will need to apply the exclusion criteria to each segment. Read more about creating list exclusions here.
