What is List Builder and how do I use it?

List Builder allows you to quickly and easily build lists from within your Dataro account

Dataro's List Builder is available to all users with a Dataro Predict module and can be accessed via Dataro Predict > List Builder

With List Builder, you can quickly build tailored lists directly within your Dataro account using a variety of filters. Once you have built your list, it can be exported into a .csv file, shared with a team member or saved so you can refer back to it at a later date. 

💡 As Dataro doesn't keep any Personally Identifiable Information (PII), we recommend running the full list in your CRM for any campaigns. Alternatively, you can build the list in Dataro and export the list including the column "Contact ID (external)" which will allow you to match the IDs back with those in your CRM. 

List Builder Filters

Dataro has built a variety of filters to allow you to easily query your donor base based on different criteria. 

Filters can be set to match "All", "Any" or "None", while multiple filters can be set to refine your list.

List Builder Columns

Columns allows you to add new fields for your final export file. You can easily pick and choose which columns to include and then reorder the columns based on how you want the export file to look. 

💡Don't forget to include "Contact ID (external)" if you are planning to match your Dataro list back to your CRM list! We recommend also including your donor's "Favorite Campaign Type" and "Favourite channel" to help you with donor outreach. 

Using List Builder in different fundraising programs

Let's explore how List Builder can simplify your workflow across various fundraising categories:

  1. Mid-value donors
  2. Major donors 
  3. Gifts in Wills
  4. Appeals
  5. Recurring Giving

1. Mid-value donors:

Dataro's Mid-value module allows you to identify donors who are most likely to donate between $/£500 or $/£1000 to $/£5000 or $/£10,000 in the next 12 months depending on your organisation threshold.

Your Mid-value donor report will provide you with information on the number of prospective Mid-value donors for your organization. We recommend using the number of prospects as a filter when you build your Dataro list in List Builder. 

In the example below, Dataro has identified 1,309 Mid-value donor prospects for this  organization.

Clicking on the link in your Mid-value donor report will take you to a pre-built list. Alternatively, you can simply click into List Builder and choose the filter of "Mid-value donor rank" is less than or equals to 1,309.

From here, we recommend using the Filters to identify your "Active", "Lapsed" and "Never Converted" prospects. 

Then you can add the relevant columns for your purposes. Once you are happy with the list, click "Save" and name your list for future reference. You can also share with a team member or export into a .csv file. 

2. Major donors:

Dataro's Stewardship module includes Major Gifts which allows you to identify donors who are most likely to donate more than $/£5000 or $/£10,000 in the next 12 months depending on your organisation threshold.

Your Major donor report will provide you with information on the number of prospective Major  donors for your organization. We recommend using the number of prospects as a filter when you build your Dataro list in List Builder. 

In the example below, Dataro has identified 123 Major donor prospects for this organization.

Clicking on the link in your Major donor report will take you to a pre-built list. Alternatively, you can simply click into List Builder and choose the filter of "Major donor rank" is less than or equals to 123.

From here, we recommend using the Filters to identify your "Active", "Lapsed" and "Never Converted" prospects. 

Then you can add the relevant columns for your purposes. Once you are happy with the list, click "Save" and name your list for future reference. You can also share with a team member or export into a .csv file. 

3. Gifts in Wills:

Dataro's Stewardship module includes Gifts in Wills which allows you to identify donors who are most likely to confirm a Gift in Will to your organization in the next 12 months.

We recommend using the size of your Gifts in Wills pipeline as a guide on how deep to go based on the Dataro Ranks. If your pipeline including Confirmed, Intending, Considering etc. is 500, then we recommend using 500 as the cut-off.  

Using the example above, we can build a list of the top 500 Gifts in Wills prospects using List Builder.

Then you can add the relevant columns for your purposes. Once you are happy with the list, click "Save" and name your list for future reference. You can also share with a team member or export into a .csv file. 

4. Appeals:

Dataro's Appeals module includes 3 propensities (DM Appeal, DM Appeal >$500 and DM 24M Lapsed) which are designed to be used together to maximize return on investment for your campaign.

Get started by finding Dataro's recommended Campaign Size Suggestion for your organization at Dataro Predict > Campaign Size Suggestions.


In this example, the recommendation is:

  • 8,000 for DM Appeal
  • 400 for 24M Lapsed
  • 800 for DM Appeal>$500

Let's build it in List Builder! 

💡 Don't forget to change the Filter Match to "Any" if you are building lists like DM where there may be overlap between the groups. 

Then you can add the relevant columns for your purposes. Once you are happy with the list, click "Save" and name your list for future reference. You can also share with a team member or export into a .csv file. 

5. Recurring Giving:

Dataro's has two modules which cover Recurring Giving:

  • Recurring Giving module includes 3 propensities (Upgrade, Reactivation and Churn) 
  • Convert to Recurring Giving 

Get started by finding Dataro's recommended Campaign Size Suggestion for your organization at Dataro Predict > Campaign Size Suggestions.

In this example, the recommendation is:

  • 500 donors for RG Churn
  • 300 donors for RG Upgrade
  • 250 donors for RG Reactivation
  • 400 donors for Convert to RG
